Jinks Hornets Dethrone Defending Champion Mowat 27-8 to Claim County Title
PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The Jinks Hornets are county champions after defeating defending champion Mowat 27-8, capping a dominant season with seven consecutive victories. Jinks delivered its most complete performance when it mattered most, building a 27-8 halftime lead behind a relentless offensive attack before controlling the clock and pitching a shutout in the second half to secure the title and end the Mustangs’ championship reign.
The Hornets struck first on their opening possession, executing on a critical fourth-and-five opportunity to punch in the game's first touchdown. Though the two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 6-0, Mowat responded immediately on its opening drive with a touchdown and successful two-point try to grab an 8-6 lead. That brief advantage would be Mowat's only lead of the contest.
Jinks answered on its second possession as Javion Thomas took control of the game, punching in two rushing touchdowns to reclaim a 14-8 lead after a successful two-point conversion. Thomas then delivered the night's signature play on the ensuing Mowat drive, stripping the ball from a Mustangs running back and returning the fumble for a defensive touchdown. Though the two-point attempt failed, the play extended the Hornets' advantage to 20-8 and swung momentum decisively in Jinks' favor.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening half, Jinks struck again on a trick play. Thomas connected with Marley Olds on a 31-yard double-pass touchdown, and the extra point sent the Hornets into the locker room with a commanding 27-8 lead. Thomas put on a masterclass on both sides of the ball, finishing with 167 total yards of offense. He completed all three of his pass attempts for 44 yards and a touchdown while rushing 11 times for 95 yards and two scores. His performance capped off an MVP-caliber season in which he racked up 1,543 total yards and 22 touchdowns, leading the team in both passing (565 yards, 8 TDs) and rushing (824 yards, 12 TDs).
The Hornets' attack was supported by quarterback Cameron Potter, who completed both of his pass attempts for 48 yards and added 25 yards on the ground in the championship game. Potter complemented the passing game all season, efficiently completing 81.5% of his throws for 326 yards and two touchdowns while adding 129 rushing yards. Olds' crucial 31-yard touchdown reception before halftime capped a standout year as the team's leading receiver with 312 yards and four touchdown catches, complementing big-play threat A. Copeland, who tallied 309 receiving yards and five touchdowns on the season. Explosive running back K. Boles added depth to the Hornets' high-powered offense, averaging 18.1 yards per carry across the season for 272 yards and three scores.
In the second half, the Hornets' defense completely locked down Mowat's offense to hold the defending champions scoreless after the break. J. Jenkins anchored the unit with a team-high 10 tackles, culminating a dominant season in which he led Jinks with 63 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, and two sacks. K. Benson recorded eight tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack in the final, finishing the year with 41 tackles and six tackles for loss. J. King added eight tackles to bring his season total to 43 tackles, while LJ Reddice disrupted the backfield with seven tackles and three tackles for loss, closing out a team-leading three-sack season. Thomas' defensive playmaking extended beyond his championship fumble recovery, finishing the year with a team-high four forced fumbles to complement an interception and a defensive touchdown on the stat sheet.
The championship victory capped a remarkable turnaround following an early-season loss to Rutherford. The Hornets responded by ripping off seven straight wins, transforming a 1-1 start into a county championship campaign. By taking down their cross-town rival in the finale, Jinks ended Mowat's title defense and brought the county trophy back home to the Hornets.
